There are few situations less stressful than watching as the water in your toilet slowly rises to the brim. But knowing how to handle this nerve-racking situation will leave you equipped in case of a toilet over flow.
1. Shut of the water supply
Check for the supply line near the bottom side of the bowl. The line should include a valve. Turn the valve counter clockwise to stop the water flow to the toilet
2. Lift the float ball
Take of the tank cover. Lift up the float ball/cup high enough until the running water stops. Use a cup or bucket to eliminate excess water at the top of the tank and the toilet bowl. Empty this water in a sink or shower if it is clean. If it is dirty, it may be best to use a plastic bucket and sanitary gloves.
3. Use a plunger
Cover the drain hole with the plunger, making sure there's water coming halfway up the cup on the plunger. Push down on the plunger, gradually increasing intensity and speed. Be careful not to break the seal. Pull up sharply releasing the suction. Hopefully, this will release the mass blocking the plumbing. Water should begin to flow. Lastly, wait until the water level drops back to normal.
